The Moisturizing Power of Meadowfoam Seed Oil
Why this relatively unknown oil is an essential skincare superstar.
BEHIND THE FORMULA:
When I began developing my line of plant-based products I researched thousands of natural ingredients and their benefits because I wanted to create a range of vegan, performance-driven skincare products that would exude the notion of 'eco-luxury'.
This new series of weekly posts will highlight some of my findings so that you too can understand why an ingredient made it to the final cut of the formula in my skincare products.
Meadowfoam Seed Oil is extracted from the seeds of Limnanthes alba (meadowfoam). The seeds contain 20-30% oil. The oil from meadowfoam seed has unique chemical properties that make it one of the most stable vegetable oils known.
Meadowfoam is a native wildflower found along waterways in northern California, southern Oregon and Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It is mainly grown in Oregon.
Botanic Skincare uses a cold-pressed virgin Oil derived from the seeds of the Meadowfoam plant grown in the fields of Oregon's Willamette Valley. This processing method leaves more active materials such as tocopherols, phytosterols, and carotenoids in the oil.
Cold-pressed Meadowfoam Seed Oil is deep red-orange in color and retains the typical earthy odor of meadowfoam seed.
BENEFITS FOR SKIN:
It is an excellent moisturizer due to it's high water absorption ability (4 times that of lanolin alone, twice that of the typical mineral oil-lanolin-alcohol blend) making this a better performer than it's animal-derived competition.
- This translates to an oil that naturally helps your skin form a barrier to lock in moisture and helps deliver a product's nutrients deep into your epidermis.
This oil's composition is strikingly similar to that of sebum (aka your skin oils) so it brings balance to your skin - leaving it soft, not greasy.
It has an extremely high oxidative stability making it one of the most stable plant oils that I use in products. Not only does this improve a product's performance, but allows it an extra few months of shelf life - so it's less waste for you and me.
